I am overcoming my extreme aversion to showing photographs of myself, in order to bring you our new [drumroll...] Permanent Resident cards! Everyone knows these official pictures never look good. But these cards are bee-yoo-tiful!

    One of the things Ottawa does pretty well is graphic design for official materials. I always find US federal materials (money, ID cards, etc) bland and over-busy in comparisson. Maybe it's because of that over-busy flag they've got... :)

    You know, I've been meaning to blog about this - thanks for reminding me. Canada has such consistent graphics. I was wondering when the govt standardized the font, the department names (Transport Canada, Health Canada, etc.).

    Maybe it's because of that over-busy flag they've got... :)

    Certainly by comparison, the Maple Leaf is so simple and beautiful. Very nice.

    While I admit to being a total lefty, I personally can not stand the maple leaf flag. I would have preferred something a little funkier. Oh well, small price to be paid for living in the best country in the world. :)

    Hey, it's the only national flag in the world with a square centre stripe. It's certainly more immediately recognizable than any of the tricolours out there... :)

    I would like to point out that Canada currently has the most secure form of national ID cards for immigration, military and gov't ID in the world. They were just replaced about a year ago. Alberta also went to the same standard of cards for drivers licenses at the same time. All 3 of these pieces of ID have the same anti-conterfeiting measures and bar code/encryption standards.

    Just a cool tid-bit from a geek like me. btw there is a project to find out more about what is on the 2D bar code, but so far no one has figured out how they encrypt the data yet.

    And yes, this is the man formerly known as anonymous Peter... now I just need a symbol ;)

    In spades! In addition to the AL East, Cleveland and Chicago play each other in the final three games of the season. That could decide either the AL Central division title, the wild card, or both. Crazy.

    I still have my New York State license. Now that I have a PR card, I'm eligible to apply for an Ontario license. I'll probably wait until my current license is up for renewal.

    Why thank you. We had (it seemed like) a million photos taken for immigration. Each time I had to wait for my glasses to lighten - you know, turn un-sunglass-y.

    I think they put in a rule about not smiling on official ID photos a couple of years back. Caused a fuss.

    when I went to get my US passport photos taken at Walgreens, the girl taking the picture kept saying, "smile!"--until the photo manager came over saying "no, no, no, no!" lol

what i'm (also) reading: tween lit

Part of my assignment for the new Kids On Wheels magazine is writing serial fiction. I haven't written fiction in many years, and when I did, it was for teenagers; the KOW audience is 8-12 years old. I'm quietly freaking out, wondering how on earth I'm going to meet this challenge. I know I'll come up with something, but will it be anything anyone would ever want to read? To start my mind working along age-appropriate lines, I've been re-familiarizing myself with classic books for the reading level. I chose five: The Phantom Tollboth by Norton Juster, A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle (one of my favorites when I was that age), the incomparable Harriet The Spy by Louise Fitzhugh, From The Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E. L. Konigsburg, and the modern classic Holes by Louis Sachar. Everyone should read Holes , it is brilliant.
