I am overcoming my extreme aversion to showing photographs of myself, in order to bring you our new [drumroll...] Permanent Resident cards! Everyone knows these official pictures never look good. But these cards are bee-yoo-tiful!
One of the things Ottawa does pretty well is graphic design for official materials. I always find US federal materials (money, ID cards, etc) bland and over-busy in comparisson. Maybe it's because of that over-busy flag they've got... :)
You know, I've been meaning to blog about this - thanks for reminding me. Canada has such consistent graphics. I was wondering when the govt standardized the font, the department names (Transport Canada, Health Canada, etc.).
Maybe it's because of that over-busy flag they've got... :)
Certainly by comparison, the Maple Leaf is so simple and beautiful. Very nice.
While I admit to being a total lefty, I personally can not stand the maple leaf flag. I would have preferred something a little funkier. Oh well, small price to be paid for living in the best country in the world. :)

Hey, it's the only national flag in the world with a square centre stripe. It's certainly more immediately recognizable than any of the tricolours out there... :)
I would like to point out that Canada currently has the most secure form of national ID cards for immigration, military and gov't ID in the world. They were just replaced about a year ago. Alberta also went to the same standard of cards for drivers licenses at the same time. All 3 of these pieces of ID have the same anti-conterfeiting measures and bar code/encryption standards.
Just a cool tid-bit from a geek like me. btw there is a project to find out more about what is on the 2D bar code, but so far no one has figured out how they encrypt the data yet.
And yes, this is the man formerly known as anonymous Peter... now I just need a symbol ;)
A great day in all, only downer being the BoSox slipping from first place ... those damn pitching woes on good-hitting teams, we know all about them here in TO.
Although, some serious spice has now been added to the final week of ball ... should be a wild one.
In spades! In addition to the AL East, Cleveland and Chicago play each other in the final three games of the season. That could decide either the AL Central division title, the wild card, or both. Crazy.

this is what the Yankees suffered from all season, but they managed to pull it together at the end. Hmph.
Yes they are nice photos...I like the maple leaf shown there. How about your driving license in Ont. are they similar? And of course, congratulations on this new adventure in your life.
Thanks everyone! Hi Gazetteer, nice to see you here.
How about your driving license in Ont. are they similar?
I still have my New York State license. Now that I have a PR card, I'm eligible to apply for an Ontario license. I'll probably wait until my current license is up for renewal.
although your "mugshot" expressions made me laugh a bit.
Yeah, I always figure you shouldn't smile for those things. It's hard not to smile!
and, hey, nice specs.
Why thank you. We had (it seemed like) a million photos taken for immigration. Each time I had to wait for my glasses to lighten - you know, turn un-sunglass-y.
when I went to get my US passport photos taken at Walgreens, the girl taking the picture kept saying, "smile!"--until the photo manager came over saying "no, no, no, no!" lol
In comments here , James brought up an interesting piece. One of the most common questions I hear up here when yet another example of Bushian idiocy, incompetence, or corruption shows up is, "Why aren't people more outraged by this down there? Why isn't anyone making a fuss?" From up here, it often looks like almost everyone's going along with Bush, though that's certainly not the case. Of course, one of the big reasons for that is that the major news networks don't think it's newsworthy when people do make a fuss. But serious opposition to Bush and his policies is almost invisible up here, except to those who make a special point of following US politics from a liberal perspective. I hear this a lot, and it drives me nuts. Millions of Americans are making a fuss. I know because I used to be one of them. Here's my reply in that same thread: A fuss? We were - oh, that's "they are" - making a huge fuss. But the Bushies control all bra...
"Cash bonuses on Wall Street are expected to drop by 14 percent during this year's 'bonus season'." Only 20 billion dollars will be doled out, with the average bonus totalling $121,000. How sad. That's billion, with a B. Bankers' trophy dates are sad, too . Be sure to click - and read to the end for maximum impact.
Thanks to ALPF, I have learned that another American war resister is seeking asylum in Canada. I am so out of the loop, lost as I am in the ancient world . Good thing you guys keep me informed. US Army Pvt. Brandon Hughey, 20, told the [Canadian] Immigration and Refugee Board that he refused "to kill people or lose my life under false pretenses." Hughey said he believed the war in Iraq was illegal and his conscience obliged him to desert his Ft. Hood, Texas army base last year. He said when he joined the military at 17 he was looking for a way to put himself through college and respected the military. "I believe some things are worth fighting for, like defending my home and my family," Hughey told the board. "I had no moral objection to fighting back then. In some circumstances, war can be justified." He believed US President George W. Bush had proof that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, so he initially supported the war. But he later deter...
Congratulations on your "bee-yoo-tiful" PR cards! Very impressive! How proud you must be!

Off-topic, how are you liking the change in the weather these past few days? It was downright November when I stepped out this morning.
I love it. It's my ideal weather - dry and brisk. Of course the other day it was anything but dry...

ReplyDeleteI think they put in a rule about not smiling on official ID photos a couple of years back. Caused a fuss.
