I am overcoming my extreme aversion to showing photographs of myself, in order to bring you our new [drumroll...] Permanent Resident cards! Everyone knows these official pictures never look good. But these cards are bee-yoo-tiful!
One of the things Ottawa does pretty well is graphic design for official materials. I always find US federal materials (money, ID cards, etc) bland and over-busy in comparisson. Maybe it's because of that over-busy flag they've got... :)
You know, I've been meaning to blog about this - thanks for reminding me. Canada has such consistent graphics. I was wondering when the govt standardized the font, the department names (Transport Canada, Health Canada, etc.).

Certainly by comparison, the Maple Leaf is so simple and beautiful. Very nice.
While I admit to being a total lefty, I personally can not stand the maple leaf flag. I would have preferred something a little funkier. Oh well, small price to be paid for living in the best country in the world. :)

Hey, it's the only national flag in the world with a square centre stripe. It's certainly more immediately recognizable than any of the tricolours out there... :)
I would like to point out that Canada currently has the most secure form of national ID cards for immigration, military and gov't ID in the world. They were just replaced about a year ago. Alberta also went to the same standard of cards for drivers licenses at the same time. All 3 of these pieces of ID have the same anti-conterfeiting measures and bar code/encryption standards.
Just a cool tid-bit from a geek like me. btw there is a project to find out more about what is on the 2D bar code, but so far no one has figured out how they encrypt the data yet.
And yes, this is the man formerly known as anonymous Peter... now I just need a symbol ;)
A great day in all, only downer being the BoSox slipping from first place ... those damn pitching woes on good-hitting teams, we know all about them here in TO.
Although, some serious spice has now been added to the final week of ball ... should be a wild one.
In spades! In addition to the AL East, Cleveland and Chicago play each other in the final three games of the season. That could decide either the AL Central division title, the wild card, or both. Crazy.

this is what the Yankees suffered from all season, but they managed to pull it together at the end. Hmph.
Yes they are nice photos...I like the maple leaf shown there. How about your driving license in Ont. are they similar? And of course, congratulations on this new adventure in your life.
Thanks everyone! Hi Gazetteer, nice to see you here.
How about your driving license in Ont. are they similar?
I still have my New York State license. Now that I have a PR card, I'm eligible to apply for an Ontario license. I'll probably wait until my current license is up for renewal.
although your "mugshot" expressions made me laugh a bit.
Yeah, I always figure you shouldn't smile for those things. It's hard not to smile!
and, hey, nice specs.
Why thank you. We had (it seemed like) a million photos taken for immigration. Each time I had to wait for my glasses to lighten - you know, turn un-sunglass-y.
when I went to get my US passport photos taken at Walgreens, the girl taking the picture kept saying, "smile!"--until the photo manager came over saying "no, no, no, no!" lol
This morning I see that Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario, is banning the Muslim religious court known as sharia . This ends months of debate about whether sharia would be legal and binding in Ontario. I'm quoting at length from the story in today's Toronto Star because many US readers are likely not up on this. In a surprise announcement that caught both supporters and opponents of sharia law off guard, Premier Dalton McGuinty says he will move quickly to ban all religious arbitration in the province. McGuinty made the announcement in a telephone interview with The Canadian Press yesterday after months of debate and controversy surrounding use of Islamic sharia law in family arbitration. "I've come to the conclusion that the debate has gone on long enough," the premier told the news agency. "There will be no sharia law in Ontario. There will be no religious arbitration in Ontario. There will be one law for all Ontarians." The announcement prompted t
This is something I've noticed throughout my Canadian odyssey, from our earliest trips to Toronto to today. I've waited a long time to mention it, to make sure I wasn't drawing a hasty generalization. Canadians seem very careful with money. Frugal. Cheap. Of course no generalization is absolute. But on the whole, people here seem very concerned with how much things cost, and with saving money. I'm not talking about people who simply can't afford things. I've been poor. I know what it is when your basic expenses outstrip your income, how wearing that is, the stress it puts you under. So we'll leave that aside. I'm talking about an attitude. A concern with spending the least amount of money possible, about avoiding or reducing costs if at all possible. An unwillingness to part with money. Phone bills. Parking. Cable TV. The garbage tags I blogged about yesterday. In the US, charging an extra dollar for garbage tags would not create an incentive to put out
I'm opening a sticky subject here, my need to understand causing me to throw caution to the wind. It's about Alberta. Alberta vs. the rest of the Canada. The Globe And Mail runs something about Alberta's gripes every day, and I try to follow along. If it weren't for wmtc's resident Albertan , and the ensuing arguments in comments, I would've had no warning. It's not something Americans know about. As is, observing for more than a year, I have only the smallest of clues. Here's what I know. Please pardon my ignorance and oversimplification, but I have to start somewhere. The province of Alberta is rich, because it has oil. The province of Alberta is conservative, relative to the rest of Canada. Hmm. Funny how those two go together. Because of its great oil wealth, Alberta revenue helps fund services in the rest of Canada. (These are transfer payments?) Apparently many Albertans resent this. They want to keep Alberta's money in Alberta. They don't
Congratulations on your "bee-yoo-tiful" PR cards! Very impressive! How proud you must be!

Thanks for that Red Ensign pic. I don't think I knew about that at all.
Off-topic, how are you liking the change in the weather these past few days? It was downright November when I stepped out this morning.
I love it. It's my ideal weather - dry and brisk. Of course the other day it was anything but dry...

ReplyDeleteI think they put in a rule about not smiling on official ID photos a couple of years back. Caused a fuss.
