The iced coffee problem has been solved! (Alex E, are you reading?) Thanks to James and Lori, I checked out the Port Credit Starbucks. Lo and behold: ice brewed coffee and the horrendously named but delicious iced Americano. I don't know where there are Starbucks in Toronto, but I'll soon be learning.

I'm also going to tell Second Cup, for what it's worth, that I'd rather spend my loonies there, if only they'd satisfy my summer craving.

    There's a Starbucks at Queen & John, kitty-corner from CityTV. That's the main one I know. There are lots and lots around, and plents of Second Cups if you want to berate them. :)

    James, tell Lori I totally believed her. I just didn't dare get my hopes up. I couldn't bear the disappointment. ;-)

    Matt, tell John I understand, big time. I wish I had sent mine back, too. Who would have guessed we'd leave NYC and actually look for Starbucks! When they were taking over our city two-per-block, we hated them!

    Starbucks? Toronto? They're everywhere. Won't take you long to find one.

    Although something interesting about Starbucks locales is there is almost always a Second Cup right next door, no matter which city you're in.

    Weird.

    This is interesting, because to a former New Yorker, Starbucks is almost nonexistant in Toronto.

    In NYC, they have literally taken over the landscape. There is one on every block of midtown and downtown - and often more than one per block! - and most neighbourhoods that are even semi-upscale are inundated too. Starbucks in NYC is like a plague of locusts that just keeps multiplying.

    So to my eyes, in Toronto, they are few and far between, and easy to miss.

    Well, OK ... not "everywhere" like the Tim Hortons world-domination-via-coffee-sales plan.

    But it seems wherever I travel in this city, I pass a few Starbucks (and of course, Second Cups). In other words, not "everywhere" as in NYC, but still enough that one is very easy to find.

    There's a great scene in the Simpsons episode where Bart gets a tattoo. He goes to the tattoo place in the mall, and the guy there says, "Well, ok, kid, but it'll have to be fast -- this place is scheduled to become a Starbucks in five minutes!"

    As Bart's leaving, he turns to look back, and ever store on all three levels has turned into a Starbucks.

    That's how I felt about the whole city! :)

    There's also that line from the movie "Best In Show": "We met at Starbucks. Not the same Starbucks..." They were each sitting in a Starbucks, across the street from each other, and waved...

This is something I've noticed throughout my Canadian odyssey, from our earliest trips to Toronto to today. I've waited a long time to mention it, to make sure I wasn't drawing a hasty generalization. Canadians seem very careful with money. Frugal. Cheap. Of course no generalization is absolute. But on the whole, people here seem very concerned with how much things cost, and with saving money. I'm not talking about people who simply can't afford things. I've been poor. I know what it is when your basic expenses outstrip your income, how wearing that is, the stress it puts you under. So we'll leave that aside. I'm talking about an attitude. A concern with spending the least amount of money possible, about avoiding or reducing costs if at all possible. An unwillingness to part with money. Phone bills. Parking. Cable TV. I'm opening a sticky subject here, my need to understand causing me to throw caution to the wind. It's about Alberta. Alberta vs. the rest of the Canada. The Globe And Mail runs something about Alberta's gripes every day, and I try to follow along. If it weren't for wmtc's resident Albertan , and the ensuing arguments in comments, I would've had no warning. It's not something Americans know about. As is, observing for more than a year, I have only the smallest of clues. Here's what I know. Please pardon my ignorance and oversimplification, but I have to start somewhere.
