first day

I start my new job today. Weird to start a job on Friday, eh? But my work week will be Friday, Sunday and Monday. I'll be working at the same law firm where I was temping, but with better hours (longer hours, but fewer days per week) and better pay.

I'm a little nervous, although I know everything will be fine. I may or may not have time to blog later in the day. We shall see.

  1. Best of luck on your First Day on your New Job! Hope you have a good "week."

  2. Strange schedule, but good. Just as people are winding down, you start working. But I take it that your "weekend" starts Tuesday and ends on Thursday.

  3. Thanks!!

    Aha! You said "eh?" :)

    I like it :)

I've had that for the last 10 years or so. I prefer it.

But I take it that your "weekend" starts Tuesday and ends on Thursday.

Well, I'm essentially working two jobs - my "day job" in the law firm, and my writing work. So I take time off when and how I can. It varies a lot depending on how much writing work I have. These days I have to work a lot, but that's the price of a three-week vacation.

  4. This reminds me of how my buddies and I used to camp.

We would take days from work, and drive up to the camp site either Sunday afternoon or Monday morning and then leave Friday morning. And those are some of my fondest memories.

The idea is to really get "out of town." I seldom do this on weekends. What is the idea of getting out of town when the whole time is coming with you? So why not do the exact opposite to really get yourself out of town both geographically and numerically?

  5. Meant to say "when the whole TOWN is coming with you." Onto more coffee...

  6. What is the idea of getting out of town when the whole [TOWN] is coming with you?

Exactly. In NYC, where everything is happening all the time, we would go out to dinner, shopping, whatever, when it wasn't super crowded. That wasn't why we started working weekends, but it was a nice perk.

We did miss some family events, and sometimes we had to lose a lot of income to go to something [like an anti-war demo], but on balance, it was great.

Here in the GTA it's just how we can get the days/hours we want. These three-day weeks, long shifts, are often how firms staff their weekends.

  7. Lori is so sweet. :)

In wonder if this means all the Starbucks in general will have iced coffee? I don't know how much leeway individual stores.

In any case, I'll visit this store whenever possible!

If you do, drop Lori a line. She goes down there during the day, so she can drop by and say Hi when you're there. :)

  9. Good luck on your new job. I've been working weekends for almost two years. 12/12/and 11 Fri/Sat/Sun. It's great.
