what i'm reading

Ta-da! A new "what i'm reading" post. I just did a Blogger search for all my "what i'm reading" posts and found fifteen of them, dating back to July 25, 2004, back when no one read wmtc.

We used our new Mississauga library cards for the first time yesterday. I found the Robertson Davies's trilogy I mentioned yesterday. We also spent a while around the history shelves, and I saw a lot of Pierre Berton books I want to read. I don't like not knowing any Canadian history. Fortunately it's a condition easily changed.

We also spent a small fortune at Home Depot, ordering window shades for our bedroom and my office. I'm watching our bank balance go down, and it would be nice if there was some money coming in, too. I'm not seriously worried - that's why we saved so much money, and the work will come. It would just be nice.

I spoke to Dr S yesterday, our specialist vet from New York. She's really pleased with Buster's progress and is lowering his meds again. She also reminded me that inflammatory bowel disease is not curable, only manageable, and we can expect Buster to be on maintenance medication for the rest of his life. Well, of course. Otherwise it wouldn't be Buster! This makes three chronic conditions we treat him for: anxiety, glaucoma and IBD.

In other news, I hate baseball.

    There is a good specialist vet office in Oakville if you need a more local option than your previous Dr. in NY. (just an FYI since I am always pleased when I see ppl who are truly caring of their animal companions) ... and...

    Welcome to southern Ontario! From your more recent post - consider a holiday in Ontario...Northern Ontario (and I don't mean Parry Sound)has some absolutely beautiful parks. Go see what the Group of Seven were painting for yourself, you'll love it.

    Thank you Amelopsis! I know about the clinic in Oakville - also the VEC in Toronto and the one in Guelph. We will definitely need one of these, the phone consults w/ our specialist in NYC are more of a stop-gap, follow-through kind of thing.

    I am definitely going to do an Ontario vacation. I loved New York State and I loved knowing its many charms - and I plan on doing the same for Ontario.

observation

This is something I've noticed throughout my Canadian odyssey, from our earliest trips to Toronto to today. I've waited a long time to mention it, to make sure I wasn't drawing a hasty generalization. Canadians seem very careful with money. Frugal. Cheap. Of course no generalization is absolute. But on the whole, people here seem very concerned with how much things cost, and with saving money. I'm not talking about people who simply can't afford things. I've been poor. I know what it is when your basic expenses outstrip your income, how wearing that is, the stress it puts you under. So we'll leave that aside. I'm talking about an attitude. A concern with spending the least amount of money possible, about avoiding or reducing costs if at all possible. An unwillingness to part with money. Phone bills. Parking. Cable TV. can of worms

I'm opening a sticky subject here, my need to understand causing me to throw caution to the wind. It's about Alberta. Alberta vs. the rest of the Canada. The Globe And Mail runs something about Alberta's gripes every day, and I try to follow along. If it weren't for wmtc's resident Albertan , and the ensuing arguments in comments, I would've had no warning. It's not something Americans know about. As is, observing for more than a year, I have only the smallest of clues. Here's what I know. Please pardon my ignorance and oversimplification, but I have to start somewhere. The province of Alberta is rich, because it has oil. The province of Alberta is conservative, relative to the rest of Canada. Hmm. Funny how those two go together.
