what i'm watching: question for canadians

I have a practical - totally non-political - question for the Canadians among us. Do you use a DVD rent-by-mail service? If so, which one, and do you like it?

I am a complete Netflix addict. We both love movies - especially enjoyed without stupid people talking behind us. (Perhaps Canadian audiences are more considerate?) I love Netflix's great selection, the service is speedy, and if you watch a lot of movies, you can't beat the price ($17.99/month for unlimited rentals).

Last year I read that Netflix was going to expand into Canada by early 2005, but apparently those plans have been postponed indefinitely. Checking around online, I found several competing Netflix-type services in Canada. I'm wondering if anyone has feedback on selection, speed of delivery, price, and so forth.

  1. I'd like to help you, but I don't use any service like that. I just go to the mom & pop video store around the corner.

  2. I can't help you either. The video store is a block away, so I just walk to it.

A lot of people do video-on-demand through cable though. In Toronto, cable service is through Rogers, and they have a fair number of movies available on Rogers-On-Demand. But you really need TMN (The Movie Network) on demand as well. Together they have about 2100 movies available.

  4. Someone must use them, just nobody I know. Of course, I don't watch a lot of TV or movies anymore. They just don't seem as interesting as they used to.

  5. That's exactly why I love Netflix. There are tons of interesting movies out there, but they are rarely what's "hot".

TV, as far as I'm concerned, serves two purposes: baseball, and something to watch DVDs on.

    Oh, and Jon Stewart. :)

  6. Either Netflix moves to Canada or Canada joins the union.

Now I will have to duck :).

  7. Jubileee to the rescue! I use one. The company I use is "Movies for Me". I've been using them for a few years now. Great customer service. Turn around will be a bit slower than what you are used to with Netflix, but out of all the Canadian companies I researched before signing up, this is the best of the bunch until we get Netflix up here. I'm happy with it. Also, since you are moving to Toronto you will be close to their shipping centre (Mississaga).

  8. Thanks Anon - and hooray for Jubileee! Thanks SO much for that.

  9. "Jubileee to the rescue!" is officially the best sentence I've read today.
    I don't know why.
    It just makes me happy.
